Brest Handball Club by the name A. P. Meshkov. A team in memory.

Today one cannot imagine Brest without its sports icon Handball Club Meshkov Brest. It seems to have existed forever. Perhaps, the name itself arouses such feeling. The team was created in memory of Anatoly Petrovich Meshkov, whose name breathes history, as it is marked by the birth of handball in the city.

The idea of creation a professional handball team originated in the mid-90s of the past century, when Brest regularly began to host a tournament in memory of Anatoly Meshkov. However, the official date of birth of Handball Club Meshkov Brest is April 9, 2002, when the founders of newly created public association received a document of state registration. An idea to create a club was primarily an initiative of sons of Anatoly Petrovich, Aleksandr and Sergei, who are still taking an active part in the life and progress of the team.

For years, during which the team have been existing, handball in Brest has matured, acquired professional infrastructure, spread across the country’s borders and became a true phenomenon not only in Belarus, but also in Europe. The club is well-known and recognized, famous handball players and specialists from all over the world come to Brest to play and to coach.

Beautiful Sports Palace “Victoria” was built in the city. Created on the original project, it became one of the architectural landmarks of Brest (in spring 2014 a dedication was added to the name of the Sports Palace: by the name A.P. Meshkov).

Right away Handball Club Meshkov Brest broke into the elite of Belarusian handball, having become a striking breakthrough at the very first year of its existence. Then Brest players for a long time occupied the first place on the podium and became regular participants of group tournaments of the Champions League. Handball Club Meshkov Brest is the first club in the history of independent Belarus that managed to reach high European level. It was Handball Club Meshkov Brest that gave a start to the revival of national handball. The decrease of level of Belarusian handball stopped, owing to the creation of the professional handball club in Brest, which became a starting point, and that was the beginning of a new life.

Today Handball Club Meshkov Brest is a professional multiple structure with accurately arranged system of functioning. At the top of the triangle is the main team, and at the base are children’s and youth teams. Thinking of the future, the club is preparing its own new shift. In a short time many young talented players will be ready to replace the old and compete with them for a place in the main team.

For sure, the peculiarity of Handball Club Meshkov Brest is its family tradition, which is carefully preserved by Ada Konstantinovna Meshkova, mother of the club founders Aleksandr and Sergei Meshkov, life partner of their father Anatoly Petrovich. Not only is she a manager of the club, but she is also a kind of “guardian angel” for the club, symbol and link of times. Thus, in spite of the fact that Handball Club Meshkov Brest is a young club, its roots stretch back to the very beginning of Brest handball and to the birth of this popular game in Belarus, yet Soviet at that time.

There is no future without a past, and Handball Club Meshkov Brest cherishes its history. And is looking ahead with confidence.
